Attend an interactive workshop and learn to apply the latest research to making learning permanent. Courses for all grades from 4-12. No more than 9 learners per workshop. Learners will receive an opportunity to use their current school work to apply the techniques learned.
I have researched study skills quite extensively and the course includes all the latest information on how the brain learns and how best to harness this. Some of the techniques included in the workshop are:
1) How to be actively engaged with your learning material.
This is based on the research which is summed up in this article “Highlighting is a waste of time: the best and worst learning techniques” Highlighting is a waste of time Annie Murphy Paul
2) When and where to learn so that you are able to recall what you have learned.
The information relating to this principle is gleaned from the Massive Open Online Course entitled “Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects” The link to a short summary of this course can be found on the home page.
There are 17 interlinked principles which the children will practise and 3 additional concepts for parents to help them support their children’s learning.
The information that is provided includes free apps to help you study and websites with programs to enhance studying. Included in the cost of the workshop each of the children would get a flash drive with all the information on it to take home.
For the Primary School Level Course, Parents (one parent per child) are required to attend with the children as they are usually very motivated to help their children and they can retain some of the information that the children might not.
Parents do not attend the workshop for High School children but are welcome to speak to the presenter about any questions which they have. Parents will be provided with a document detailing how they can support their High School child with their studying.
A maximum of 9 children will be accommodated with their parents. The course would be 4 hours long with breaks.
In order to make the course relevant and to promote the children’s motivation they need to choose a subject such as Natural Science or Social Science and bring their textbooks, exercise books and any additional material for that subject. This ensures that we would cover actual material that they are going to be tested on. If the children all have access to iPads or tablets then a practical section using the apps will be included. A list of relevant apps for the parents to download will be sent out prior to the course in order to avoid technical problems.
